This breakdown usually occurs gradually over a period of months or years. As these tendons get repeatedly stretched they will loose their elastic quality and reach what is known as plastic deformity. This is a fancy way of saying that they can no longer bounce back and retain their original length. The loss of this elastic property is what allows dysfunction within the foot to occur.

As these arches begin to fall they cause a distortion within the foot which causes it work at less than optimal. This dysfunction can translate throughout the leg and in to the low back.

Good fitting supportive shoes will help but without addressing the cause of the problem, the fallen arches you will continue to suffer dysfunction and pain. Living with postural distortions will slowly wear down the body and can lead to conditions such as arthritis and degeneration of the joints and connective tissues. These are issues that you can not exercise away.
